Another story. Another championship.
But this one wasn’t about winning.
The Setup
I don’t remember exactly, but I think I was a blue belt at the time.
We had a road trip ahead of us — 6 or 7 hours to another city for a tournament.
Several athletes from our gym were going. But a few of us decided to share a car to split the costs. We also booked two hotel rooms between us.
Classic broke BJJ life.
The Real Championship
Here’s the thing about road trips to competitions:
The best part isn’t the fights.
It’s not even the tournament itself.
The best part is having a beer with your training partners the night before. Telling stupid stories. Laughing about nothing.
And then waking up the next morning praying you didn’t exceed the weight limit.
(Spoiler: that beer probably didn’t help.)
The Result
I lost my matches.
But the memories? Those will always be with me.
The car ride. The terrible hotel. The nervous energy before weigh-ins. The post-tournament meal where we analyzed every mistake.
That’s what sticks.
The Lesson
Competitions come and go. Wins and losses fade.
But the people you share the mats with? The ones crazy enough to drive 7 hours just to potentially get choked out?
Those bonds last forever.
That’s the real championship.
